General Information About Department of Economics

Department of Economics concentrates on teaching and research in areas of economic theory, economic policy, economic development and international economics and economic history. It embraces the challenges of how societies produce to meet their needs, of what is produced, by which means and in what quantities and of how are distributed. The main goal of the department is to provide its graduates with a good grasp of economic theory and policy and to show them how statistical and mathematical techiniques are used to solve practical and theoretical problems.  

The main function of the department is to provide our graduates with a through understanding of economic fundamentals. To this end our curriculum embodies a rigorous treatment of the major fields in economics and mathematics. The program secondly aims at broadening the intellectual scope of our students by providing them with a range of electives that they can choose from, depending on personal interest and aptitude. In designing the program the department has taken care to keep the number of required courses within the minimum university requirements so as to provide our students with different options and not to overburden them.

The undergraduate program of the department offers a wide range of courses in all fields of economics and the students graduate with a strong background in economics. The economics education they receive at Sakarya University constitutes a solid base to develop more applied skills. Graduates of the Department have wide employment opportunities in both public and private sectors and in the financial institutions. In addition, they can follow a career as a certified public accountant.

The Department of Economics offers both undergraduate (B.A.) and graduate (M.A. and Ph.D.) degrees in economics. The modern analytical and quantitative methods of economics are emphasized, not merely as tools but as part of an overall approach to train students in systematic and independent critical thinking.

The department has 4 fields which are Economic Theory, Economic Policy, Economic Development and International Economics, and Economic History. In these fields there are 1 professor, 11 assistant professors and 5 research assistants. For the Department of Economics,

16 faculty members work in these fields. In the table below, numbers of educational staff are shown as to their sub-fields. 

In order to have a bachelor in undergraduate program, at least eight semesters of study is required. In these programs there is no differentiation according to the interests of the students in the first four semesters, yet beginning with the fifth semester there are intense expertise and discretionary courses.

Participants in the master programs have to prepare a thesis after compilation of the two-semester course program. In the Doctorate program, the candidates have to be successful in the qualification examination after a two-semester course program and then are required to prepare a thesis.

 The duration of the study at undergraduate education is at least eight semesters, while it is four semesters for masters, and for the Ph.D. program.
